Azalea ‘Lemon Lights’

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Alan Summers Fragrant Deciduous Azalea that Blooms in Spring and Fall Some azaleas and rhododendrons occasionally bloom twice - in the fall, as well as spring, depending upon the weather. For years, breeders have been trying to amplify this repeat bloom trait to achieve azaleas and rhododendrons that will bloom reliably every fall and spring. We have trialed several of these fall blooming azaleas and the results here in Zone 6 have been disappointing, although our trials continue and we have high hopes for one new variety which we are just starting to evaluate. However, we happened upon one deciduous azalea, with no reputation for reblooming, that blooms for us reliably every fall and spring year after year. This week we are featuring that azalea, the Northern Lights hybrid ‘Lemon Lights.’ Beginning about 20 years ago, The University of Minnesota began developing a new super hardy series of deciduous azaleas called Northern Lights. Their goal was to allow gardeners in colder areas to enjoy azaleas in their gardens. This series is also known for being extremely floriferous, putting on a stunning floral show in late spring. Coincidentally, a few cultivars in the series turned out to be quite fragrant and foliar fungus resistant. ‘Lemon Lights’ has striking two-toned lemon yellow flowers which are lighter at the outer edges of the petals and deeper at the throats. The flowers emit a powerful sweet citrus fragrance. The dark, glossy foliage has excellent resistance to powdery mildew and provides a beautiful contrast to the clear yellow blooms. Fall foliage color is maroon bronze. Expect ‘Lemon Lights’ to reach 5-6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Planting and Care Deciduous azaleas prefer more sun than evergreen azaleas, although they do best with some protection from the hottest afternoon sun. When planting ‘Lemon Lights,’ select a site with almost full sun to light shade that has well-drained, acidic soil. Azaleas have a very shallow, fibrous root system and can dry out rapidly. For that reason, be sure to water during dry periods and hot summer days. Does best in an area with well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Do not plant too deeply; place the top of the root mass level with the soil surface. Dig a shallow hole and backfill around the plant with equal parts mixture of organic compost and the existing soil. Until established, do not allow the soil to dry out. Fertilize with Espoma’s Cottonseed Meal and Kelp Meal when planting and again every year in early spring and late fall. Hardy in zones 4-7. Sacred Love - Maintianing the Balance in Love and life

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Christopher Walker In many relationships, the honeymoon is expected to last little more than a few months, some less. But in a relationship, built on the principles of sacred love, the honeymoon lasts forever. Honeymoon really, means honey mood. A mood of gratitude and great affection, appreciation and devotion, a sacrifice of lower priority life choices to that of love. In my book Sacred Love, the honeymoon that lasts forever I share these five universal laws of love. These principles stand the tests of time, and if followed means that a couple will celebrate love in its highest form, forever. The first principle. Falling in love for most people is an accident of fate. One minute they are standing waiting for the train, the next moment they are in love. Their mind stopped just long enough for love to appear through the haze of everyday life. Bewildered, the ego cannot function, there are no expectations, they literally fall to truth, a sacred magnificent experience. From then, the details are left to chance. That moment becomes the memory on which their relationship is build. As if they are lost in a jungle having once glimpsed the treasure, they search and search and waist their precious life looking for the love they felt in those first moments. The first principle of Sacred Love is the road map back to that first exquisite sacred experience of falling in love. No longer will it be an accident, or something to search for. A couple will know how, at will, to experience the very reason for their relationship. They will fall in love at will. They key is stillness. The ability to separate mind noise, expectations, doing, chasing, wanting, desiring, emotionalizing and all the distractions from love. The ability to separate the external world of the ego, to the internal world of emptiness and truth is really important for love. There are many paths to this place of stillness and most of them come under the umbrella of spirituality. But there is a problem with this. Any spirituality that holds a philosophy is imparting mind noise. Replacing one noise with another, one should with another should. Real Stillness can only come from nature. Sitting in nature, the quiet of the forest, the calm of the ocean, the magnitude of the mountains, soft breeze against your skin, cool icy snow; all this, brings the human heart to peace, and therefore awakens the spirit of love. This is the temple for life. Natures temple. A park, a garden, a riverbank, a beachside walk. Swim in the pool, or sit. The key is to forget yourself. Loose the self obsession of I want and surrender to nothing, emptiness. Then, in this time, the love that is the real purpose of any relationship will surface, and you will be renewed. The second principle. Romance, for most people is what they do when they want something. But sacred love is a function of giving not taking. Romance is a sacred way of giving love. The conditionality of most love is that romance stops if the response we get is not what we expect. But sacred love is about giving, not giving to get, giving to love. For the vast majority of lovers romance fluctuates. Sacred Love simply means appreciation. We know that there are two sides to every coin and with sacred love we see both but focus on the positive. This way, we are treating people as we wish them to become rather than focusing on the negative and wishing them to change. Foolish love thrives on emotion and therefore runs when there is challenge. It is unsustainable and a very western perspective of relationship. But wise love knows that challenge is an opportunity for depth. The victims who run to empathetic ears to groan about how they were mistreated, only gather more aggression. The victim mindset is supported by so many new age philosophies which subsequently disempowered the individual. True power in life comes only when we can honestly repeat the mantra, nobody does to me more than I do to myself The second principle of sacred love is the principle of appreciation. It is an easy principle in the first months of love but then expectations and old baggage can create negative mindsets, which subsequently create what they fear. Better in love to force your hand, to reach deeper and to greater consciousness by asking how can I appreciate that? or what is the benefit of that? this is the second principle of sacred love, the power of appreciation. Remembering that what you appreciate grows, appreciation, gratitude is the path from emotion to love. Feel the emotion and ask, how can I appreciate that search for the other side and you will have romance of a sacred nature in your heart and in the heart of your lover. It is magnetic. The third principle To err is human, yet, in love, forgiveness is a promise few people can truly sustain. Accidents happen, stupidity takes only a second, a word misplaced, an act of unconsciousness, a fear revealed can destroy the sanctuary of love if we cannot grow from our mistakes. The height of your love is determined by the depth of its roots. To judge, be righteous or to smother your lover in your fears is to kill the most precious gift you can be given. Love grows at the border of chaos and order. What stops growth? The ego stops growth. What drives the ego? Fear drives the ego. What drives fear? Knowledge. So learning more does not cause growth. No, this is the wrong path. Learning less, unlearning causes growth. With learning we learn to judge, this is right and this is wrong. But this is the ego. An illusion. With unlearning, we see that there is no right or wrong, just our own fears and beliefs. With unlearning we can rise above myth and beliefs which keep us in an internal war. We can only find peace by growing through challenges. We can only sustain love by growing through unlearning. The key here is sustainable happiness. Many believe that the love they first experience is the love they will sustain in relationship. But this is not the case. Love is not a fixed thing. Love that does not grow deteriorates because emotion and noise crowd it and darken it. Emotion and life itself crowds love out and replaces it with materials, and expectations and emotions. To sustain love you must become vigilant against righteousness and emotion. You must be prepared to change and grow, evolve and expand. You must be prepared to acknowledge that it is your mind that kills love, not the other persons behavior. The forth Principle What binds the stars in their seemingly eternal orbit? Why dont the planets fly into oblivion? What holds every molecule and every atom in a state of harmony? Why do water droplets hang together and how do we explain the synthesis between mind, body and soul of humanity? The answers are in the powers of attraction and repulsion. Forces bind molecules and stars and humans. Those forces are universal, they are known by many names, gravity, magnetism, desire, and centrifuge. But they are united by one of the most potent powers know throughout the mysteries of time as, thought. Thought in its purest form is light. Thought spun into the emotion of the ego is material. Two people can fall in love, but if their thoughts hold no magnetism, no attractive force, then, like comets in the sky, they will, with time, pass by each other. Thus, short term, highly potent, emotionally charged love affairs fade into the night, if no power of thought underpins the experience. The thoughts that hold lovers together are dreams. This may seem trite, but the potency of a human dream is beyond any measure. Dreams have driven all action worthy of remembering in human existence. The scientist or the poet all dreamed before they acted. And so, this forth key is the glue that binds love forever. Dreams can be short, like I dream of happiness. This will hold no power. Dreams can be material, I dream of a new house on the hill this will fade and leave lovers wondering why they ever struggled with love at all. Dreams can be fantasy, like I dream of a lover who does not confront my beliefs this will be a cold hard, loveless and violent life. And dreams can be real. The dreams that bind lovers are dreams shared 33%. Individuality accounts for 66% of our motive and 33% must be a common ground. That common ground must be real, there is no forgiveness in mythical dreams that end in disappointment, or escapist dreams that will end in blame. No, the dream of potency is real and speaks to the contribution a couple can make to the world outside of their love. What they can do as a couple that they could not do as individuals to make the world around them a grander place. Dreams built on myth will fail, and the resentment of unfulfilled promises will flow into all aspects of a sacred relationship. Body mind and spirit will loose its attraction, the love that united the couple will become damp. The key, is shared dreams, the dream of intent rather than content. A FOOTNOTE TO THE 4TH PRINCIPLE Beware the dream that comes from myth. If you hear yourself speaking in half truth shake your consciousness violently. Too many people gravitate to teachers whose motive is to collect their money and therefore cannot confront the darkness of half thoughts (emotion) if you hear yourself speak of happiness without challenge, love without sadness, pleasure without pain, shake yourself hard as a good teacher would. Because such trivial thinking, even if it is endorsed by your so called guru, is sure to kill the sacredness of any relationship you create in your life. The fifth Principe I walked into a home decorated with amazing paintings. The lady was divorced and she accused her ex husband of being a cruel and vindictive man. All the goods that decorated her home we gifts from him and were bought with stolen money, including the jewelry on her fingers. The diamonds that glistened on her everyday hands came from what she had labeled as a very dark place. Although she admired the rings and paintings, and claimed them as her share of the marriage break up, she was truly unconscious of the affect these affirmations was having on her life. Although, in good faith, she was seeking spiritual support, nothing could overpower the toxin that surrounded her everyday life. Her attachment to the goods and victories of her relationship, kept her bound to the ever present resentment and negativity of that past. She could neither heal the past with love and appreciation nor create the relationship she deserved. Every word we say, every thought we have, every possession and every wall in our home carries with it a story far beyond what we see. A second layer of life exists and, with our busy lives fixed on the future and accumulation, we are often oblivious to the affect this other layer can have. Illnesss are often traced to environments. Emotions are very much environmentally caused. And most significant for this article, relationships can be highly vulnerable to the environment, the artifacts, the paintings and circumstances in which it lives. In one home of a broken marriage there were paintings on the wall of dark scenes of torture and death from a well known movie. Dark hate and pain emanated from these expensive works of art. In another home, where a relationship was failing, there were no visible signs of toxic mix but when I explored further I found that the neighbors often fell into violent rage and physical abuse. Even a cat would shy away from such a place to groom its fur and soothe its nerves. But this couple were invested in the property and had not seen the affect. Everything we do, think, say, feel, own, want, and wish to get rid of affects our relationship. Most toxic are our thoughts, and in particular the thoughts we have of the past. Any person who carries anger, hate, resentment, blame or victim hood from the past into their future relationships (usually by saying Im over it now) guarantees the pollution and toxin that they left in the last place will sabotage the present one. Unfinished business, as I put it in Sacred Love, must be dealt with in order to arrive available for a Sacred Relationship. Love is a lifestyle. You cannot be a loving partner and a cruel employer. You cannot be a loving friend and a miserable lover. No, we are one person, and the expression can only be disguised by gifts and materials. We are one person, work, life and play. We cannot fake it. And we are highly affected by our environment. Love is cumulative, its a lifestyle. Love builds in great environments and dies in bad ones. As negative thoughts during meals can affect the food and our assimilation of it, so, negative environments affect our love. Phone calls from past partners that are negative cast shadows on our relationships, anger at past lovers kill the joy and spirit of laughter that is natural in a healthy relationship. Expectations created from wounds or infatuations with role models and guru worship kill spontaneity. Love is affected by environments and environments are affected by sound, sight, feel, taste and smell. I hope this article has stimulated your mind, challenged your beliefs, inspired some new ideas for you in your days and years ahead. How to make the honeymoon honey mood last forever? Begin by acknowledging that you, and only you need to make the commitment to it, by accepting that nobody does more to you than you do to yourself. This is spirituality at its highest truth and the pathway to causing sacred love in your life. Family Reunion T-Shirts

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Kristy Annely Getting together and remembering the old days, is what a family reunion is all about. A family reunion is a special occasion when all the family members, including grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunts, get together to reconnect with each other. It gives them a chance to remember the old days, reconnect to their heritage, and discuss their ideas and lives. In the USA, a family reunion is just as important as celebrating a local festival. Thus, various special preparations and arrangements need to be made in order to ensure that the memories of this day remain long-lasting in the hearts of all the family members. With some advance planning and a bit of creativity and effort and imagination, you can ensure a memorable, exciting, and entertaining day for the entire family. A great way to immortalize the reunion day is to get some special t-shirts printed for all the family members. To implement this idea, you need to choose a creative family member who can create a design for the reunion t-shirts. Once the design is ready and approved by the whole family, then by using thermal transfer paper, which is easily available in markets, you can iron the design on the t-shirts. And along with the invitation cards, send the t-shirts to all the members. Thus, on the special reunion day, you and your family would certainly enjoy wearing the same t-shirt. This will also create a sense of unity and togetherness. That is what a perfect family reunion is all about. How To Analyze Junior Exploration Companies

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Rob Rens Most conventional analytical techniques cannot be applied to junior exploration companies. Most juniors lack either a property with a PROVEN economic ore body or sufficient capital to attain production should a mine be found. How then are junior companies evaluated? The following are some factors to be considered: 1) Extent of exploration activities and location of properties 2) Management’s track record - Is management experienced? Have they discovered or do they operate any producing mines? 3) Financial position - Is there enough working capital to finance exploration or will more treasury shares have to be issued ?( this is where dilution comes into place ) 4) Common shares issued - How many common shares are issued and outstanding? (o/s) If a company has few assets and a great number of common shares o/s ( I smell OTC … ), a reverse stock split may be necessary before new equity capital can be raised. Successful analysis of junior mining companies and their correlating share price requires SPECIALIZED knowledge (Shhh, can you keep a secret), patience and willingness to devote a great deal of time to security selection. Shares of junior mining companies can resist sharp price fluctuations in response to favorable or unfavorable news or rumors. Nimble trading is required if profits are to be realized or losses minimized. Stockhideout.comPenny Stocks and Stock Message Board Penny stock investing site to help members when buying penny stocks. Guidelines Of Doing Business In China

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Alina Hoon In the last two decades, no country like China has received so much coverage worldwide. Their economy expansion has attracted many foreign investors who want to get a piece of the growing economy. Furthermore, with regard to the WTO, China has been relaxing their restrictions on foreign investments regulations. This actually indicates that the government is supporting foreign investors to enter into the China market. China is placing more importance to the quality rather than the quantity of foreign investment. This shows the development of the China market where they are focusing on refining their economy as they expand further. The growth of the China market is increasing as such a high speed that the number of foreign companies is flocking in each year. From 2001 till 2005, China has attracted 345.6 billion U.S. dollars in foreign investment more than the 323.3 billion dollars that poured in over the nine years from 1992 to 2000. China markets appeal to foreign investors are growing at such a rapid rate that Chinas economy is no longer just a production factory. Foreign companies are entering into China not only to produce their goods but also to selling their products to the local consumers. However, entering the China market needs a lot of tactics, networking, and familiarities. 1. Tactics Many of the foreign investors who enter into the China market have a huge amount of experience in business administration and marketing strategies. However, the Chinese have a different way of doing business and most foreign companies do not have the correct tactics to deal with things in China. 2. Networking Most people would agree that networking is very important for business dealings. With a strong network, we will be able to seek for help or consult someone if any problems were to occur. In China, networking or guan xi is one of the main methods which the Chinese use. Guan xi is the Chinese term that the locals use. The Chinese believe that everyone needs to establish good relationships with others. The only way to really survive in China is through guan xi. Foreign investors may think that as long they have good business relationships with other organizations would lead them to be successful in China. However, this is only partially true. In China, any kind of relationships are important. Be it a personal or business or even governmental relationship, all of them are crucial in establishing a successful enterprise. With good personal guan xi, the Chinese can rope in people whom they can trust into their business. The Chinese believe in having trust among their counterparts. With good business guan xi, the Chinese would be able to negotiate easily and collaborate with others to ensure a lasting partnership with other parties. Having business guan xi would allow the local companies to meet more clients and suppliers to expand their business. With good governmental guan xi, the Chinese would be able to settle their bureaucratic and administrative work faster as their contacts would be able to advise them on a personal level. Furthermore, any problems encountered with the paperwork, the Chinese would be able to seek help through their governmental relationships. Thus, the Chinese value relationships very highly and even though their business with their contacts failed, the Chinese would continue to maintain a close relationship with them. 3. Familiarities To enter into the Chinese market, one must have a good grasp of the Chinese culture. As different countries have their own unique way of values and working styles, lots of conflicts tend to arise due to differences. Thus, the foreign companies need to familiarize themselves with the Chinese culture and understand how the Chinese work. For example, without a full understanding of how the Chinese handle with the authorities can bring a lot of problems to the enterprise. The way the Chinese communicate to the authorities differs from how the way it works in other countries such as the US and Europe. Hence, one of the best ways to familiarize themselves with the Chinese culture is to engage a local individual or firm as the link between the foreign company and the China market. Local parties have the expertise to handle any problems and have a better idea on how to negotiate with the local firms. Alina Hoon is a consultant of Starmass International. Avoiding Outdoor Wedding Cake Disasters

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Jeanette Shinn Outdoor weddings can be some of the most spectacularly beautiful settings of all, but they can also set the stage for a wedding cake disaster. The problem is that there are so many more variables when you move outside than when you are inside. As a result, the trick is to find a way to minimize the risk of a wedding cake disaster so that you can approach your big day with confidence. To do so, however, means that you must first identify the common threats to the well being of your cake and how to protect yourself against each threat. Birds: A Wedding Cake Disaster from Above You’ve spent your hard earned money on a beautiful wedding cake. Don’t risk a wedding cake disaster by placing it in an area where birds might fly over. Invest in the protection of at least a patio umbrella if not a tent if your cake must be outside. Four Legged Animals: A Wedding Cake Disaster from Below We’ve all seen movie scenes where a neighborhood dog chases a cat under the table holding a gorgeous four tiered wedding cake causing the proverbial wedding cake disaster but have you thought about the wildlife? I’ve seen a squirrel in a park climb right up onto the cake table. It no doubt it would have tasted the cake and might have even climbed the towering creation if it had not been chased off. What do you do to protect yourself from this kind of wedding cake disaster? At very least appoints someone to stand guard and fend off unwanted intrusions. I would suggest, however, protecting your cake and your entire day by placing the edible artwork you commissioned inside a large wedding tent with screened walls. You can have the walls taken down when your bridal party moves to the reception area if you like, but in the mean time your investment will be protected until you are ready for it. Insects: A Wedding Cake Disaster Invasion We all know how much insects in general and bees in specific like sweet things. Protect yourself from a wedding cake disaster by first; knowing your reception location and time. Is that area prone towards insect problems in the time of the year when your wedding is planned? If so, and maybe even if not, take precautions. Get a large tent with screened walls and don’t take them down until you have cut and served the cake if you are seeing insects looking for ways to get at your wedding cake. Or better yet, plan your reception inside. Many places that cater to outdoor weddings offer beautiful reception hall options. Heat and Humidity: The Natural Enemies of Your Wedding Cake Wedding cakes are food. That much is obvious. But we often forget that almost all foods need a climate controlled environment. In most cases, a cake will stand up outside for the length of a normal nuptial ceremony, but in the event of extreme heat or humidity you might have a natural wedding cake disaster brewing. In high heat or humidity your icing colors will run as the icing begins to soften and sweat. When it softens enough, it will begin to pull away from the cake. If you don’t have an indoor reception opportunity and you are having an outside ceremony at a time when it is likely to be humid, hot, or both you can protect yourself from a wedding cake disaster by choosing a fondant wedding cake with subtle or no added icing color. The fondant will raise the cost of your cake by approximately thirty percent, but fondant holds up better in the heat (better, not invincibly) and you can add color accents with ribbon or fresh flowers - which will save you money over having your icing colored since it has to be done by hand. So plan that gorgeous outdoor wedding that you’ve always dreamed about. Enjoy the backdrop of creation. Weigh the incredible rewards against the risks. Decide how much risk you are comfortable with and implement plans to minimize the danger. Once you’ve done so you should be able to prevent a wedding cake disaster from ruining your big day. Flowers Wilting? Tips for Making Your Flowers Last Longer

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Janna Hagan We all know one disadvantage of flowers is that they don’t last very long. While they are here they bring happiness and warmth to any dull decorating space. If your flowers are dieing awfully fast, then you may be using poor flower care routines. There are many little things that you can do to lengthen the life span of your flower arrangements and flower bouquets. Many florists and flower shops provide good information on how to care for your specific flower type. Read on for a few extra tidbits of information on expanding the time that you can enjoy your flowers. A main cause of deterioration in flowers vases is bacteria. Be sure your bowl or vase is clean and your water is pure. Always replace your water after 2-3 days. If any of the leaves lower down the stem are submerged under water, cut them off to prevent the spread of bacteria. Also, floral food provided by your florist should kill harmful bugs and dirt.To prolong the beauty and life of your flowers, choose a reputable flower outlet. More experienced florists are likely to understand how different types of flowers need different water, fertilizer, etc. When you order flowers, they usually arrive in well wrapped protection. The flower bud will usually be closed or half opened. This ensures that you can view the full time span of your flower. Your plant food for your arrangement or bouquet will encourage the bud to open. Using lukewarm water in your vase will prompt flowers to open faster. Because of lower oxygen levels, it helps the stem to intake water. Never place your flowers in bright or overheated areas in your home. This breeds bacteria and causes an excess water loss. Use a vase that is in proportion to the size and amount of flowers that you have ordered. This could create even more water loss that you are not aware of. When ordering flowers online, remember these tips and your flowers will last longer than ever before so you can enjoy the warmth and beauty of nature in your home. How To Sew A Shopping Tote Bag

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Marian Lewis Looking for a very useful simple sewing project that is fast and easy to sew? Here is how to sew a fabric shopping tote bag. Help the environment by sewing several shopping bags for yourself, or give them as gifts. The kids can use them for toy bags when they go to Grandma’s house. They are great travel totes, too. You will love fabric shopping bags. Use them for all sorts of things besides carrying groceries. Use up some of your stash and make a few today! Give them to your favorite charity. They love them! Fabric: Use whatever fabric you want to use. Try cottons, upholstery fabrics, fake suede, leather, canvas, denim, etc. You may prefer to use washable fabrics so you can easily launder your bags. 1-1/4 yards of 45 inch wide fabric will make two (2) bags. Preshrink and straighten the fabric. Cutting Instructions: Cut a panel 19-1/2 inches wide by 41 inches long for each bag. Cut (preferably on the lengthwise grain) two (2) handles for each bag 4 inches wide by 17 inches long. It is easier to cut and sew one long strip 4 inches by 34 inches and then cut it in half. Sewing Instructions: Fold the bag panel in half and press a crease in the bottom. Press a 1 inch hem in the top of the bag. Fold the hem down again and press making a double hem. Repeat for both front and back of the bag. Let it cool on your ironing board and then open the hems back out. NOTE: If you are applying pockets, appliques, embroidery, etc, to the bag, do it now before you sew the side seams. Make sure hems are open and stitch 1/2 inch side seams to make the bag. (serge or sew). Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch and zigzag to finish the edges. Press seams. Turn down the double hem and stitch in place. Press. While pressing the hem, determine the center front and center back of the bag by folding so that side seams are lined up and press a light crease at the top of the bag. This will help you place the handles. Make The Straps Press a 4 inch wide strap piece in half to set a crease. Open back out and bring the cut edges to the center on the pressed crease. Press. Now fold on the original crease and press again. The cut edges are enclosed. Edgestitch on both sides of the long 34 inch long strap. Cut in half to 17 inches to make two strap handles. Zigzag raw ends. Mark and Attach the Strap Handles At the bag hem, measure out both sides from the center front and center back of the bag about 1-3/4 inches and make a mark. This allows 3-1/2 inches between the handles. Place the inside edge of the handle at this mark lining up the zigzagged edge of the handle with bottom of the bag hem. Pin in place. Stitch a 1 inch square to attach the handles to the bag. Box The Bottom Of The Bag To box the bottom of the bag, turn it wrong side out. Center a side seam on top of the crease at the bag bottom forming a triangle. With the bag bottom crease on top centered over the side seam, measure down from the point 3-1/2 inches and mark. Fold over the triangle lining up the point to the bag bottom crease and press a triangle. Open the triangle back up and stitch on the folded press line (base of the triangle). Repeat for the other side. This will form a 7 inch box in the bottom of the bag. You can leave these triangles folded down into the bottom of the bag or you may trim them off and finish the edges with serged or zigzag stitches. Support the Bottom (not really necessary) Also, you may want to cover a piece of cardboard with your fabric to lay in the bottom of the bag for added support. This can be removed to launder the bag. Cut the cardboard 7 inches wide x 11-1/2 inches long. Cut the fabric a little larger. Fuse/glue fabric to the cardboard. Tip: Double the bag when the load is extra heavy. Make it double layered or simply place one bag inside the other when needed. Enjoy Your Fabric Shopping Bag Use it to tote whatever you want wherever you want. Make the handles longer if you want to carry the shopping bag over your shoulder. Add your special trims, appliques, monogram, embroidery, paints, etc. to make the bag uniquely yours. Add pockets inside and out in different sizes to hold your keys, wallet, etc. You are the designer. Sew your own designer shopping tote bags. Asian Ginseng - Medicinal Uses, Interactions, Side Effects, Dosage

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Steve Mathew Asian, Chinese, Korean, or “true” ginseng are all common names for Panax ginseng, one of the world’s oldest known herbal medicines. The word Panax, of Greek derivation, means “all-cure” and gives rise to the word panacea. In Chinese, “ginseng” (schinseng) refers to the human-shaped figure of the root, which is believed to suggest powerful properties. White ginseng refers to the unprocessed dried root, while red ginseng refers to the steamed root, which is red or caramel colored. Uses and Benefits: Ginseng has been used for thousands of years in Asian countries to boost energy, relieve stress, improve concentration, and enhance physical and cognitive performance. It is claimed to be a general restorative, tonic, or adaptogen, which restores the body’s balance, enhances stamina, and increases resistance to stress and disease. Among many other claims, ginseng is also recommended as an aphrodisiac, for cardiovascular diseases, to prevent or treat cancers, and to prolong life. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng is used to restore the vital life force (qi or chi) in the body. Asian ginseng is considered more stimulating or heating (yang), while American ginseng is considered more calming or cooling (yin). Pharmacology: The triterpene saponins, commonly referred to as ginsenosides, are considered to be the main pharmacologic constituents of P. ginseng. At least 30 of these steroidal compounds have been described, based on their sugar side chains. The most abundant or important ginsenosides are Rg-1, Rg-2, Rb-1, Rb-2, Rc, Rd, and Rf. Like lipid-soluble steroid hormones, ginsenosides may insert into cell membranes and interact with membrane channels and proteins, or transverse the membrane to initiate genomic effects. In addition, polysaccharides, polyacetylenes, and other non-saponin constituents of P. ginseng have pharmacologic activity. Hundreds of in vitro and animal studies, mostly from the Asian and Russian literature, have investigated the biochemical and pharmacologic activities of P. ginseng, and numerous properties have been described. For example, pharmacologic effects on the cardiovascular system (anti-ischemic, antiplatelet, vasodilatory), endocrine system (hypoglycemic, ACTH-stimulating), immune system (immunostimulatory, anti-inflammatory), and nervous system (CNS-stimulating and inhibiting) have been reported. Cytoprotective, cognitive, and anticarcinogenic activities are also alleged. Cytoprotective effects include resistance against ischemia, toxins, oxidation, and radiation. Clinical Trials: Fifty-seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were found in a systematic review of the worldwide clinical literature, but many have significant methodologic flaws. The Chinese and Russian literatures in particular are unreliable, as methodologic quality, flawed criteria, and publication bias are common oncerns. Therefore, double-blind RCTs in the American and Western European literature with statistically significant results are discussed here. Most of the best RCTs used a European proprietary product (G115, standardized to 4% ginsenosides) as either a mono-preparation or a combination product containing a mixture of vitamins and minerals (sometimes combined with deanol, or dimethylaminoethanol bitartrate) . Physical Performance-Many controlled studies have been reviewed. Eight double-blind RCTs evaluated chronic dosing of standardized ginseng products in volunteers on cycle ergometers Four trials found a significant decrease in heart rate and an increase in maximal oxygen uptake, whereas the other four trials found no improvement. Evaluation of these studies does not suggest that ginseng significantly improves physical performance. Cognitive Functioning-In two separate RCTs, the G115 preparation increased arithmetic calculation ability (without affecting other cognitive skills),16 while a different ginseng product enhanced abstract thinking and auditory reaction times (without affecting memory or concentration)Y The combination G115 product improved cognitive functioning in middle-aged patients with mild memory impairments, but failed to improve cognition in geriatric patients. A combination ginseng/ginkgo preparation had equivocal effects on memory (beneficial effects after the lIlorning dose, but detrimental effects after the afternoon dose). Overall, these studies do not suggest consistent benefits in memory, concentration, and cognitive function. . Quality of Life (QOL)-Several placebo-controlled trials have uvaluated the G115 combination product on overall QOL (i.e., well-being) over several months. One research group found no overall benefits using two QOL questionnaires in healthy adults, and using three QOL scales measuring well-being and menopausal symptoms in perimenopausal women. Benefits were found in certain subsets of questions. Other RCTs also railed to find statistically beneficial effects for QOL, somatic symptoms, and activities of daily living, or mood and affect. In contrast, beneficial effects were reported in two RCTs evaluating the G 115 combination product in stressed or fatigued subjects. In a study of patients diagnosed with “functional fatigue,” a significant decrease in the fatigue score was seen after 6 weeks of treatment. In 625 “stressed or fatigued” adults, QOL was significantly improved compared to the vitamin and mineral components alone. Overall, no consistent benefit on QOL is discerned, although efficacy may be better in “fatigued” patients. Immune Function-Immunologic effects have been evaluated in three RCTs over 2- to 3-month study periods. In healthy Thai students, no changes were found in total and differentialleukocytes, or in lymphocyte subpopulations. In contrast, G115 was reported to increase leukocyte activity, NK cell activity, and T-Iymphocyte quantity and activity in healthy adults. In another RCT of 227 volunteers by the same investigators, G 115 significantly decreased the incidence of colds and flu (13% in the ginseng group vs. 37% in the placebo group), and increased antibody titers. . Endocrine-In an 8-week RCT of 36 type II diabetics, 100 or 200 mg/day of a (presumably Asian) ginseng product improved fasting blood glucose levels and HgA 1 c levels (200-mg dose only) compared to placebo. However, lack of reported data make these study results difficult to analyze. The G 115 product did not affect glucose levels measured as a secondary endpoint in a separate trial of 60 healthy non-diabetics. Significant increases in sperm count and sperm motility, as well as serum testosterone, FSH, and LH levels were reported in one uncontrolled study of 66 men. However, controlled studies have failed to confirm these effects. No hormonal effects were found in an RCT of 384 perimenopausal women with hot flashes, based on estradiol levels, FSH levels, endometrial thickness, and vaginal cytology and pH [22]. Testosterone levels were also unaffected in a 3-month RCT of 90 men with primarily psychogenic erectile dysfunction. Although improvements were reported in subjective erectile functioning, this study did not appear to be double-blinded. . Miscellaneous-Ethanol consumed with 3 g of Korean ginseng decreased serum alcohol levels in one small study, presumably by increasing blood alcohol clearance. In 24 patients with chronic non-viral hepatitis, a 3-month RCT found insignificant effects of the G115 combination product on liver testing. In three epidemiologic studies from Korea, ginseng use was associated with a decreased risk of certain cancers (head and neck, gastrointestinal, liver, pancreas, and lung). Epidemiologic studies cannot confirm causation, however, and all three studies were conducted by the same research group. Adverse Effects: Side effects appear to be mild and uncommon, and are usually similar to placebo in controlled clinical trials. Rare idiosyncratic reactions have been reported, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and cerebral arteritis. Estrogen like properties such as vaginal bleeding and mastalgia have been associated with ginseng use in isolated reports. However, a cause and effect relationship is doubtful, as controlled clinical studies of standardized products have not demonstrated hormonal effects. Many of these reactions are most likely due to adulteration or contamination by unrelated herb or drug products, which has been well described with many Asian herbal medicines. CNS-stimulation and a “ginseng abuse syndrome” (hypertension, nervousness, insomnia, skin eruptions, and morning diarrhea) were described in 10-20% of chronic ginseng users in an uncontrolled survey of psychiatric patients in 1979. These adverse effects have not been observed in controlled studies, and this “syndrome” is probably nonexistent. However, several Asian ginseng supplements have been reported to contain significant amounts of methylxanthines, and CNS-stimulation has been reported with ginseng use in other psychiatric patients. Side Effects and Interactions: Asian ginseng appeared to inhibit the effects of warfarin in one patient, although no interaction could be detected in a rat model. Ginseng combination products were loosely associated with stimulant or manic effects in two patients taking phenelzine, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Overall, interactions do not appear to be a significant concern, but data is limited. Cautions: Adulteration or contamination with drugs (e.g., steroids, stimulants, sedatives), pesticides, and heavy metals has been well described for many Asian herbal medicines, and is a particular concern for pregnant and nursing women. Although caution in using ginseng during pregnancy and breast-feeding is advisable, in a survey of 88 women who consumed ginseng during pregnancy, reproductive outcome was no different than matched controls. No mutagenic, carcinogenic, teratogenic, or adverse reproductive effects are seen in animal models. Preparations & Doses: Ginseng is commercially available as the whole or powdered root, in capsules and tablets, as teas, candies, and in many other forms. In traditional Chinese medicine, 10 g or more may be employed, usually in combination with other herbs. In Western herbal medicine, 1-2 g/day of a crude or powdered root preparation is commonly used.Commercial extract products (standardized to 4% ginsenosides) are usually dosed as 100 mg b.Ld., which is equivalent to about 1 g/day of ginseng rooP The proprietary extract examined in many controlled trials (G115, standardized to 4% ginsenosides) is marketed in the U.S. as Ginsana, and the product combined with vitamins and minerals as Vitasana (Pharmaton Natural Health Products). The American Botanical Council’s Comprehensive Ginseng Evaluation Program recently analyzed 13 commercially available “standardized” Asian ginseng products for lot-to-lot consistency. Most products were reasonably consistent, but the ginsenoside content of a few products was more variable. Summary Evaluation Asian ginseng is claimed to have multiple pharmacologic and clinical effects, most of which have not been established in rigorous controlled trials in the Western literature. Although some controlled studies have reported potential benefits, many others offer contrasting results and thus provide little convincing evidence. The overall evidence does not support claims that Asian ginseng can reliably improve physical performance, cognitive functioning, and quality of life. Beneficial effects on fatigue, diabetes, and viral URIs have been demonstrated in single or limited clinical trials, but in general, the efficacy of Asian ginseng is not established beyond a reasonable doubt for any indication. Side effects appear to be rare.Although millions of people have taken ginseng daily for years, suggesting that it is very benign, adulteration or contamination of Asian ginseng products with unwanted substances is concerning. The Di Vinci Code - The Doctrine of Devils

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Anthony Smith The Book and Movie entitled, The Di Vinci Code, is a fictional account of the life of Jesus. It is not based on Scripture, nor is it based on any Historical fact concerning Jesus. The basses of this book, initially, was to gain monetary recompense for the author and nothing else. I cannot understand, How anyone that has any knowledge of the Bible Could, 1. Read any book that denies the Truth of the Scripture. And 2. Revert to paganism, because they believe that this or any other Gospel that is presented to them was true. James 1:5 is just one proof that God did not withhold and knowledge about Christ nor Mary Magdalene. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Jesus stated that His kingdom was not of this earth. Remember that Scientist and Archaeologist are in the work of guessing. Their theories are just that theories, not based on fact but on biased opinion. I have read and watched interviews and articles that they have written, that state, their views on, especially the Bible, is tainted and extremely predigest against the word of God. These people see only in black and white, and have no vision into, the spiritual and in God doing the impossible. If Scientist and Archaeologist, denie that God exist, and denie that the Bible is true, then how can anyone believe their accounts? In history, many men have tried to get rich off the suffering of Jesus, from the soldiers that guarded him on the Cross, to this present attempt by the author of this book. Where the problem lies, is that people from the United States to India, are taking this account as fact and not what it actually is, Fiction. I wish to share a letter from a good friend of mine in India, concerning this book. Quote; Hello in Christ, greetings from India,The Christian faith in India is already weak & oscillating, it’s always questioned, but somehow we stand according to the Grace granted to us. In this situation everyday in TV the stuff about Di Vinci code is telecasted, the Catholic priests are called to answer but they are without the power of the holy spirit. They are not bold enough, many Hindu people have faith in all & every God, they have faith & respect on all gods, including Christ, but this code put off all faith, so I believe God must interrupt in this matter to open their eyes, we need to pray unitedly,in Christ, Paul & flora Jesudoss.Unquote. My Brother Paul Jesudoss, is the Pastor of the Church of Jesus, in South India. So as you can see here, this fictional book has lead many to cast off their faith in Jesus. This is totally unacceptable and needs to be addressed by all Ministers of God. Those Ministers that have no response to this delima are in need of Guidance of, the Holy Spirit, to defend the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our duty and is our responsibility. 1Ti 4:1-2; Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith(Departing from the Faith, is the Faith that we have in God, Jesus, The Holy Spirit and The Holy Bible, that they all exist and are truthful.), giving heed to seducing spirits(These seducing spirits are those that denie that Jesus, is both Lord and Christ.), and doctrines of devils;( Doctrine; Teaching, Knowledge and Instruction.)(In this sense, false, misleading, confusing and Lies.) Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; What we must remember, the Di Vinci Code Book, is not fact but only fiction. When people take the book as fact and try to believe in it then, their belief in the, so called facts, stated by the book, becomes a cult. 2Co 11:12-15; But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion (Incidental need; casual exigency; opportunity accompanied with need or demand. Opportunity; convenience; favorable time, season or circumstances.); that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. Satins devils have taken, occasion and opportunity, showing themselves as angles of knowledge, of this author and book, to take advantage of both, to undermine the truth of the bible. The author was unaware of the results that this fictional book would cause. He was used and deceived by devils. You may ask,Can devils appear before men, in the flesh and as an angle? The answer is yes. Angles and devils can and do appear to men. The proof is first in; 2Co 11:12-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.(Again this is speaking of Devils.) And no marvel (Don’t be surprised.); for Satan himself is transformed(Physical appearance changed to represent something or someone else.) into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers(Devils) also be transformed as the ministers(Preachers) of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. Also in; Heb 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. These are just a few verses proving that Angels and Devils can appear to men, in the flesh. Other instances of this is found from the Old Testament to the New. So how then do we defend the Gospel against these false doctrines? One thing we don’t do is gather research, time lines, historical records, but rather we use the scripture against it. Phi 1:17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel. Paul stated that I am set for the defense of the gospel. He knew that there would be those not of God, that would bring in false doctrine and false Gospels. He didn’t go after records nor others testimony, but rather was set(Standing Fast) to use the Gospel of Jesus Christ to defend against these false doctrines. Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. The Di Vinci Code, being a fantasy book, has become a doctrine to those that believe it, a gospel to those that don’t understand the difference between the truth of the Bible and the rhetoric of mans written books. These people then that spread this and other books as truth, being contrary to the Bible, become accursed by their own testimony. Luke 19:22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. 2Th 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 2Th 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: And to those that try to serve many gods, remember that God is a jealous God and will have no other gods before Him. You cannot serve two masters, you cannot serve two gods, for by trying to worship multiple gods, you alienate the True God from amongst you and you become bastards and not sons. Ars.
