Natural or Synthetic Fertilizers In the Vegetable Garden- What’s the Difference & Which Should I Use

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

By Jim Kennard What does “Natural” mean, and what does “Synthetic” mean? And exactly what makes synthetically produced fertilizers, if there is such a thing in the first place, any worse for your garden than naturally produced ones? This is one area in which a lot of balony gets thrown around - and regrettably believed by many good people. The simplest and most natural of the commercial fertilizers is probably lime. It’s also almost universally recognized as important, and used by every kind of gardener who knows what he’s doing and has access to it. The world has an inexhaustible supply of limestone (calcium carbonate), and it’s simply ground to powder in powerful rock crushers, bagged, and sold to the public. We even receive much of our magnesium from the same process, when the raw material is dolomitic limestone (labeled as dolomite lime). All twelve of the other nutrients man can control are also mined from the earth. However, we have learned over time how to remove impurities, such as heavy metals, and increase the concentration ofthe individual nutrients, by running them through a simple concentration process. This is often just a sulfuric acid bath, which leaves us with a much higher concentration of the original nutrient, plus sulphur, which is itself a very important nutrient. This is one reason most of the nutrients come as a combination with sulfate (zinc sulfate, etc.). So, we benefit by getting a much higher concentration of the nutrient we want, plus sulphur, with no heavy metals, and it costs MUCH less to ship to our locations, because it weighs only a fraction of the original raw material. Are those fertilizers synthetically produced? I don’t think so, but perhaps they are by some peoples’ definition. Did you know that even nitrogen is mined out of the ground? This may surprise many people, but it actually is - in Chile, South America - where huge mines of sodium nitrate exist. But can you imagine the cost to get it to the USA, though? And what would we do with the sodium salts?? Thank goodness we have found a better, more efficient, and therefore far less costly way to produce nitrogen fertilizers. About 90 years ago two German scientists, Fritz Haber and Karl Bosch, discovered and commercialized the processes by which nitrogen could be separated from other elements in different compounds andmade available as fertilizer. These discoveries arguably served as the single most important component leading to exponential global agricultural growth, and the Haber-Bosch process is still the benchmark process used today. I believe the world owes much of what we have agriculturally today to the use of nitrogen that has been produced by the Haber-Bosch process, and whether or not it’s synthetic is, to me at least, irrelevant. I do believe there is a valid and important argument against the uncontrolled “synthetic” production of chemicals having to do with the garden, but I believe it should be limited to pesticides and herbicides. This is a more complex issue that will take more time to discuss, and we won’t go there at this time. I do hope that readers of this article are able to understand and appreciate the value and importance of mineral nutrients in helping us grow strong, healthy plants, and that you will not spend your time worrying about “natural” or “synthetic” fertilizers. Should You Send ‘Save the Date’ Notices To Your Guests?

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

By Sara Haese Youve probably heard about Save the Dates since they have become quite popular with brides but you might not know exactly what purpose they serve. Peoples lives are getting increasingly busier and more tightly scheduled so thats where Save the Date announcements come in handy. You want to make sure that your guests, especially family and close friends, keep the date of your wedding open when planning their schedules. To ensure this, youll want to consider sending out Save the Date notices shortly after you have set your wedding date, especially if its several months in the future or around a holiday. Proper etiquette doesnt dictate that these advance notices have to be sent but in todays world it helps your guests in their planning so they can be sure to be with you sharing in the celebration of one of the most important days of your life. If you do decide to send them out, you are not required to send them to every one of your guests but youll probably want to at least include close family members and friends. Guests who will have to travel to be in attendance will find them especially helpful for giving them plenty of travel preparation time particularly if you are having a destination wedding. Its easy to be creative when sending out your Save the Dates since there are so many different varieties and designs available. Magnets have become a favorite selection and why not since your guests can easily stick them onto their refrigerator as their reminder. Some magnets have the option of including a photo and some actually show a calendar of your wedding date month with your date circled for easy reference. Scratch Off Cards are a fun, unique way of announcing your wedding date. Your date will only be visible to guests after they have scratched off the appropriate area on the card similar to lottery tickets. They come in great playful designs sure to make your guests smile. Announcement Cards can be as creative or as simple as you like. They come in varying designs, colors and themes from whimsical to more traditional. Some of them even come in creative shapes. All designs are printed with your wedding date and names and some even give the option of including the wedding location. Blank white mailing envelopes are usually included in the price no matter which design you choose. Be sure to list at the bottom of your Save the Date the added line, invitation to follow, so guests wont assume that this is the actual wedding invitation. This is also why its imperative that everyone who receives your Save the Date will also receive your wedding invitation. Wedding invitations play an important role in planning your wedding, and in todays society, Save the Dates are becoming increasingly popular because of your guests busy schedules. You want to do everything you can to make sure family and friends will be able to share in the joy of your wedding day. Why Payday Loans Should Only be Used in an Emergency

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeffrey_Meier]Jeffrey Meier Payday loans are emergency, temporary, high interest loans which can be availed at short notice against the paycheck and employment history. It is meant for an unsecured, short-term, cash advance until next payday. Payday loans are helpful to cover small, unexpected expenses like medical emergencies etc while avoiding costly bounced-check fees and late payment penalties. These loans are approved much faster and require fewer papers. Even people with bad credit history can apply for it. Now, you can even apply online for Paydays loans and the loan will get credited to your bank account within 24 hours. Sometimes the lender may require a cheque from you which he will cash after the next pay comes if you are not planning to rollover. The fee charged will be either a percentage of the loan amount or affixed amounts like say $20 for all loans from $50 to $500. In case you roll over the loan, the fee will be added for every period say for every 15 days full fee will be added up. If you need to borrow a sum of $200 then you would have to write a cheque of $220 for a period of 2 weeks. The extra amount is the finance charge which the lender would not charge until the next payday. But after that if you fail to pay back the amount he can deposit the cheque of $215. The usury law prohibits interest rates if it exceeds the annual percentage rates. As the financial charge goes on increasing, in most of the states the rollovers are forbidden. Benefits of Pay Day loans are: A person with bad credit history can also apply. No hassle of a credit check. These loans are easy to apply. You can even apply on phone or on the Internet. The loan gets automatically deposited into your bank account within 24 hours. No up-front costs. It is discreet and secure. The bank details are not shared with anybody at all. Helpful during emergency situations like medical emergency, urgent car repairs etc. Application and approval is easier, requires less time and paperwork. The lender will tell on the spot if the application has been approved or not. Unrestricted use of loans allowed. The loan proceeds are not restricted to be used for any particular purpose, the borrower may choose to spend it at will. No long term hassles as this loan is payable at next paycheck itself. No processing fee involved with these loans. The closing fee that is sometimes substantial for other bank loans is absent in Payday loans. Unfortunately our life is unpredictable. We never know what will happen next. You may be in a good situation now but it may also happen that the very next moment you are faced with a situation which you had not expected. Unexpected events take place and sometimes you may not be well equipped to deal with it like medical emergency or your car braking down, in such cases payday loans can save you as you can get fast cash. Payday loans are great emergency loans. You just have to be careful to pay back the loan from next paycheck. How To Ensure Your Wedding Day Is A Great Experience

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Lesley-Ann Graham Everybody will tell you that your wedding day is all about you. Everything must be just the way you want it, from the look of the place to the flowers. The food must be your favorites and the entourage must be people that you both love. There will be possibly be a couple of hundred people present to help you celebrate your special occasion. They are your guests. Be a great host and don’t bore them at your party. Don’t forget that your reception is meant to be a memorable event, but also a great party. Give your guests a fun time. Let them go home raving about what great hosts you are. Weddings don’t have to be dry and dull and just… white! Now don’t go overboard. You don’t need to have a lot of activities. You just need to have a few that allow most of your guests to get involved. You don’t want the program to drag on so long that people are hungry and anxious to get your reception over with. It doesn’t have to be expensive either. For example, you already hired a DJ or a singer. Simply put in great music that everyone will enjoy dancing to. Why not have a reel or a square dance and let everyone let their hair down? If you want to share happiness, appreciate your guests. Why not have gifts for your guests who have been married the longest? How about creating a video to thank your guests? You can even create one specifically for your parents. Simply put, get your guests out of their seats and having fun while they are with you. If they can’t actively participate at least give them a good show. They will thank you for the great time as well as the wonderful memories. Wild Wilma and Random Acts of Kindness

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Saundra L. Washington Early Monday morning, October 24, 2005, wild hurricane Wilma hit Boynton Beach, Florida with a vengeance that suggested she had finally unleashed a grudge built up against us for years. The sound of her fury was terrifying and the winds seem to howl judgment day has arrived.” As I shared with a friend in the aftermath of Wilmas uninvited visit, I am not one who frightens easily, but this experience was horrific and the only thing that brought me any degree of peace in the midst of it was knowing that my Father was with me in my safe place for He was the One who made it safe. I believe it was Dr Lawrence M. Gould, former president of Carleton College, who once said I do not believe the greatest threat to our future is from bombs or guided missiles. I do not think our civilization will end that way. I think it will die when we no longer care. Surely Dr. Gould is correct. Care is the driving force behind kindness and the power that enables man to help himself through the simple act of helping others. Of course, we all know this to be true. Our history is rich with the realities of man forgetting himself in crisis and reaching out to help his neighbor. Many have given their lives for the sake of those they never even had the opportunity to personally meet. Many of us touch peoples lives everyday through simple acts of loving kindness. It may not be broadcasted across the net and it may never become newspaper headlines, and it may never be a topic of discussion on Oprah, but millions of people around the world unconditionally and unselfishly extend themselves in ways that only they can and for the benefit of others. Neither hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes nor anything else can obliterate that deeply entrenched capacity of man to care for one another; to do all that is within our power to offer some measure of relief to hurting souls, particularly in times of severe testing. ……………………. I was standing in the middle of my living room dreading the inevitable chore of moving furniture out of Wilmas way in the event she chose to invade my personal space, when a knock at the door jolted me out of the trancelike state I was in. It was my neighbor Barry asking if I was prepared for Wilma. Responding in the negative he asked me to escort him to his car which I did. Once there he opened his trunk and took out a case of bottled water and told me it was for me. I was flabbergasted, surprised and totally caught off guard. Water was my number one priority among items I had to be sure I secured. I thanked him profusely and offered to reimburse him which he flatly refused and seemed offended that I should be making such a ridiculous suggestion. He also let me borrow a flashlight that was, in a sense, self rechargeable. There is another neighbor, Brian Conte, who was especially kind to me and others during this crisis period. It wasnt surprising really because that is something that I had observed about his personality. He is kind in nature and loving in spirit. The sort of person who would give you the shirt off his back before he realized it was his only one. Then, after discovering it, would purchase another only to once again give it away. In my mind, he is the personification of kindness and God blessed me richly when He permitted my making his acquaintance. It just so happens that his brother, Larry, provided him with a generator (probably other aids as well) which certainly improved his quality of life in the absence of services normally rendered by Florida Power and Light. It wasnt too long after that that he knocks on my door holding a pot of coffee. I could not believe it. It was just what I wished I had. He then invited me over to his place and offered me not only some additional non-perishables and a big bag of ice (how did he know my needs?) but good company as well. Isnt this what we mean when we talk about passing on kindness? Brian was blessed through the random act of Larry (generator). I was blessed through Brian having been blessed. Someone will be blessed through my having been blessed through Brian having been blessed and so on and so on and where it stops, nobody knows. I am always deeply touched by those who help me without being asked and not expecting anything in return; those who, like Barry and Brian, offered to share when they did not have to. I would not have been the wiser nor would I have been worse off. God’s gift lay in the fact that by their choosing to extend kindness to me, I was better off. Though I am sharing from my personal encounters with these angels, both Barry and Brian are known for lending helping hands to many of our community residents. Well, it is not feasible to write about everything positive that came my way in spite of the negative winds of Wilma. Suffice it to say, God truly blessed me during a time when my finances were tight and my physical and spiritual abilities weakened by circumstances. Random acts of kindness by caring people made all the difference. To Brian and Barry I dedicate one of my favorite poems written by Joseph Clark. THANK GOD FOR YOU Thank God for you, good friend of mine. Seldom is friendship such as thine; How very much I wish to be As helpful to others as youve been to me. Of many prayer guests, one thou art On whom I ask God to impart Rich blessings from His storeroom rare, And grant to you His gracious care. When I recall, from time to time, How you inspired this heart of mine: I find myself inclined to pray, God bless my friend this very day. So often, at the throne of Grace, There comes a picture of your face: And then, instinctively, I pray That God may guide you all the way. Some day, I hope with you to stand Before the throne, at Gods right hand: And to say to you at journeys end; Praise God, youve been to me a friend. Thank God for you, friends of mine. Weight Loss Success - A Nutritionist’s 10 BEST Tips

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By Lori Pirog You’ve heard it before, possibly more times than you care to remember. To lose weight simply eat less and exercise more. The problem is there could be nothing further from the truth. The concept is true–eat less and exercise more–but there is nothing simple about weight loss! Don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise. I could spend hours, no maybe days or weeks explaining why it is difficult. However, I imagine that isn’t necessary because you already know just how hard it can be. What’s worse is that losing the weight is only half the battle. Keeping the weight off can be even more difficult! However, there is a secret to successful weight loss. Unfortunately, many people who learn this secret fail to recognize its power. Instead they are like those who seek a get-rich-quick scheme. They are easy targets for the next clever marketer who promises to reveal how to lose weight fast without a proper diet or exercise! 1. The secret or single most important concept to keep in mind for successful long-term weight loss has been well proven. You must choose a healthy diet and lifestyle that you can maintain for the rest of your life. That’s it. Did you know that the true meaning of a diet is simply what you eat? You are already on a diet of your own choosing whether you think of it that way or not. The good news is that you have control over what you select for your diet. And every day offers you an opportunity to make small changes to improve. Small changes maintained over time can result in significant results–weight loss, looking better, feeling better, and reduced risk for illness and disease. The remaining 9 tips will teach you what you need to keep in mind when making changes to your diet. 2. Choose to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. The benefits of these choices are enormous! These foods are chock full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy phytochemicals. Vitamins and minerals work overtime to keep your body functioning properly. Fiber adds bulk to the food you eat, gives you a sense of fullness and satisfaction, and keeps your digestive system working smoothly. Phytochemicals are the new kids on the block. They are the source of healthy antioxidants and other compounds that benefit us in a multitude of ways scientists have only begun to discover. Add a small amount of lean meat and fish, and low-fat milk products to round out and balance your diet. But give emphasis to the fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. 3. Eat fewer refined carbohydrates. Yes, this means cutting back or eliminating sweets and refined breads and cereals. Instead choose to eat whole grains whenever possible. Look for whole grain listed first on the ingredient list and products with more than two grams of fiber per serving. Four or more grams per serving are better. 4. Drink lots of water! Six to eight glasses of water are best. Tea and a small amount of fruit juice can be a source of some of that water. Reduce or eliminate your consumption of additional fruit juice, sugary drinks, or alcoholic beverages. 5. Avoid highly processed foods with added sugars, artificial sweeteners or excessive fat. Many low-fat cookies, cakes, chips, crackers, and desserts are high in refined carbohydrates and calories and have little or no fiber. 6. Determine how many calories you actually need. Be realistic! Calculate your basal metabolic rate and calculate the additional energy (calories) you need for daily activities. Most women need a minimum of 1200 calories and men 1600 calories a day to prevent their metabolism from slowing down. 7. Keep a food diary to keep track of your food choices and count calories at least for a week or two. Putting in the time and effort to do this may not be fun. But the benefits are HUGE. You will likely gain some essential insight about your current food habits and what you need to do to change. 8. Learn what triggers you to overeat. Jot some notes in your food diary each time you reach for food. Were you actually hungry or were you eating just because the food was there and you could? Was the food a reward or means of soothing your anger or frustration after a difficult day? The key here is having an understanding of what you are feeling before you eat. This gives you the option to make a different choice. 9. Get support! Whatever the challenge you might be facing, having family or friends who are supportive is a big help! However, be aware of those who may want you to stay just as you are and instead of helping actually sabotage your efforts. 10. Exercise! What can I say? Exercise matters! Be creative and find a form of exercise that you will like. Take these suggestions to heart. Make one small change at a time. Added up the changes you make with your diet and lifestyle could mean significant weight loss and better health for years to come! Want more weight loss tips and strategies? An Introduction To Wedding Cakes

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By Thomas Morva A wedding is one of the sweetest moments in ones life, and to compliment the great occasion, it is only natural to serve sweets. Cakes, like sweets, are an integral part of a Western wedding. Once the wedding ceremony is over, the traditional wedding cake is served to the guests. For this, even the knife, the container, and the table are decorated beautifully. The wedding cake should go well with the wedding. The taste and style of the couple is clearly reflected in the design, shape, and decoration of the wedding cake. There are some prerequisites to choosing the most suitable wedding cake. The proposed budget is the prime factor. After deciding the budget, a good baker, caterer, or expert chef should be selected. The correct selection of the wedding cake remains a stiff challenge due to the wide range of options available regarding flavors, colors and decorations for the cake. Usually, the wedding cake is massive in size, and multi-layered or tiered. It should complement the wedding dress, the place of reception, the weather conditions, etc. Tradition demands that the bride and the groom share the first piece of the cake, after which other guests partake of it. Sometimes, a portion is preserved so that the couple can share it either on their first wedding anniversary or on the birth of their first child. The wedding cake can be made in various flavors and colors. Some opt for the traditional ones, while others prefer new designs and tastes too. A single flavor can be used. But it would be nice if it could cater to the different tastes of the guests. To achieve this, each layer can have a different flavor. The topping or the icing can also be done in many ways, the traditional being the white cream icing. Even the shape is undergoing changes, and miniature cakes are becoming a common sight. Some of the preferred flavors are cheesecakes, mousse-filled cakes, chocolate, orange mud, and fruitcakes. Fillings can be picked from the list of chocolate, coconut, custard, almond, vanilla, etc. At the top of the cake, the figures of the bride and the groom can be seen. The cake can be decorated using many colors or design themes. The basic idea or tradition of the wedding cake is to make the occasion memorable, to be cherished by the couple as well as their friends and loved ones. The tradition of serving cakes is laudable, as it symbolizes the sweetness, prosperity, fertility, and love fostered through marriage. Create a Great Water Garden

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

By Jeanette Joy Fisher Among the latest new trends in gardening is the water garden, which can combine elements such as waterfalls, ponds, and fountains, often enhanced by intricate rockwork, elaborate lighting, specialized plants, and exotic fish. There are water gardens to fit every budget, as well. All you need is something that will hold water to use as your garden’s centerpiece. The placement of your water garden is your most important decision. You’ll want to choose a spot that gets as much sunlight as possible, generally away from trees or bushes that shed their leaves, because most plants and fish require a fair amount of sunlight to thrive, and deciduous trees and shrubs can make keeping your water element a chore in the fall. You’re only limited by your budget, the size of your space, and your imagination, but always bear in mind that your water garden will require a certain amount of maintenance, which you’ll have to do if you want your garden to continue to look great. If you incorporate fish into your garden scheme, they’ll also need to be fed as part of your routine maintenance program. If you use aquatic plants in your water garden, only cover about half the surface of the water. It will allow you to see your ornamental fish underneath. You may also want to plant flowers around the edge of your pond, and there are some plants that will actually add oxygen to the water, which is important, especially if you have fish in your pond. Fish can help keep the pond clean by eating insects. Algae is one of the primary problems encountered by water gardeners, and it’s often brought about by overfertilizing water plants or feeding fish too much or too often. For many years, people in England have used barley straw to help reduce the amount of string and filament type algae, but it may not work in every situation. If you experience algae problems–and you probably will–pay close attention to the feeding regime of both your fish and your water plants. To keep your water oxygenated and fresh, you’ll need a pond pump and filter, which can also help reduce insect and algae problems. Water plants also remove nutrients from the water that could create pollution problems. Some good plants include water hyacinths, water violets, and water crowfoot, if you bear in mind that they tend to reproduce vigorously and can quickly take over a pond. Like all gardens, water gardens require a certain amount of care, but the results can give you years of pleasure. Copyright 2006 Jeanette J. 2 Great, Free Techniques to Get Customers to Come to You, Not the Other Way Around

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

By Steve Faber Here is a powerful tip on how to substantially increase the traffic to your business weather it’s online or bricks & mortar. The best news is that it’s totally free! You will get more targeted traffic to your website and more customers through your front door. I’ve used this technique for my $1.5 million bricks & mortar business and several of my websites. I can tell you it works, and it works well! You can do it too! It’s more effective than advertising and won’t deplete your marketing budget. The technique is the power of publicity. Free publicity is easy to get and is extremely effective. Publicity is usually viewed by most consumers as more credible than advertising. You can get publicity in many forms but two of the best techniques are press releases and submittals to publications. Both of these can put your business in front of thousands or millions of prospective customers. Almost every market is served by one or more newspapers, magazines, e-zines, newsletters or websites. These let you get super, targeted traffic. Almost all of these publications take press releases. You can use press releases to announce a new website, product, personnel change, or business milestone. They work great and are almost always accepted. In online venues you can include a link to your site. Many businesses use these on a regular basis to keep their firm in the news. It’s solid gold! Here are five things you should remember when writing a hot press release. 1) Make sure it is something people will really want to hear about. With so many niche markets, you are almost sure to be able to target your product, service or website to one of them. If you cant, its probably time to rethink your niche anyway. 2) Make it simple. You want to write the way people really talk. Dont use a lot of fancy language. Make it as easy for people to get what you are telling them as possible. 3) Remember, you are trying to get free publicity. Be sure to include all the contact information about your company. If you are using an online release, make sure you include a link to your site, an e-mail link, or both. 4) Just the facts, mam. You need to have all the facts pertaining to the product, service or business you are announcing with just enough sales sprinkled in to make it interesting. Dont over do it. Its a press release, not an ad. 5) Put the news at the beginning, and then follow with who is releasing it. Make sure it is news that will grab people and make them want to read further. Most e-zines and newsletters are hungry for good content. If you are what’s known as a SME (Subject Matter Expert), they will be happy to take your submission. As a condition of your submission some will even pay you for your article. Most however, will not pay you but will include a tagline with a link to your website. It builds quality traffic and your credibility at the same time! It’s an extremely powerful combination. In most cases it’s far better than anything you could pay for.
