Passive Passive here means broad spectrum media ads which stimulate the front runners - who are the gasoline for the engine of the movement of any new product from “new” market development until it becomes a commodity. These are the TV or newspaper ads that stimulate enough people to act. This stimulus/response takes a little selling, but, is a lot easier than direct sales, and is a little harder than merchandising commodities. B. Active This is direct sales. Direct sales means that you called (or mailed to) them directly and went for a “yes” or “no” without them being predisposed in the first place. Direct sales is the most difficult to achieve, but is also the most rewarding when successfully accomplished. Because price is not an object. For example: Media ads for new windows - Once there is an inquiry, a professional sales person is sent to “close” a sale. This is a skilled and highly paid professional. But even harder and more high-paying is the non-response selling of a new product or service. Getting an appointment on a new product (generating leads) is a chore in itself. Secondly, sales of perceived value are lower in close rates than media response leads, but the control of the number of responses and sales is much greater. You are not dependent upon as many exterior conditions being favorable (seasons, inflation, etc.). Mail order also falls into this last category. To be “good” at marketing any one of the above levels does not necessarily mean much with the other categories. Do you have inexpensive “passive” promotions? By Kevin Frulow Ever since I went through my growth spurt in my teen years, I’ve been obese. I finally said to myself “I’m tired of being fat and people looking at me, I’m going to be thin and muscular”. I actully accomplished that over the last year. Now I run every day. I feel great and I eat like a horse because of my high metabolism. You too can have what I have and learn how to lose weight quickly. You just have to commit yourself to a whole new lifestyle. Here’s some weight loss tips: 1. If you want to lose weight quickly, try some intervals. Intervals are a combination of running and walking. For example: You can run for 5 minutes and walk for 5 minutes then repeat. This pumps your metabolism up and also allows you to have a “resting” period while walking. Do this every day and the fat will melt away and you will notice your clothes getting bigger… or you getting smaller! 2. Eat Breakfast! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you don’t eat it, your body doesn’t give itself the jumpstart it needs to keep a high metabolism throughout the day. Make sure to eat within 2 hours of waking up. 3. Do not eat right before you go to bed. This is just asking for trouble since it would be extra energy your body stores which translates into fat. Give yourself a couple of hours in between that last snack and bedtime. 4. Stay away from processed foods, soda, foods with fructose syrup, hydrogenated oils and trans fats. When you go food shopping, try to pick a variety of foods, preferably whole grain and organic foods. If you’re going for the deli meats, stay lean by choosing turkey or roast beef. 5. Water is important! Drink at least 8 cups of water a day. This keeps you hydronated and flushes out your body of toxins. Your body consists of mostly water anyways. 6. When you’re working out, make sure you give each half of your body a rest every day. For example if you work your upper body on Tuesday, only work on your lower body on Wednesday, alternating every day. This gives your body a chance to actully build muscle onto your body. Please remember that strength training is a very important role in weight loss. Ever hear of the term “turn fat into muscle”? That’s not literally what happens but it is pretty darn close. When you build extra muscle, your body needs more energy. This is why body builders eat alot. Their metabolisms are very high, they are very muscular, therefore they have low body fat. Additional research has shown that people who are severely obese live up to 20 years less than people who are not overweight and are much more prone to contracting cancer. Some researchers have estimated that obesity causes about 300,000 premature deaths in the U.S. annually. In addition, obesity is fuelling an epidemic of type 2 diabetes, which also reduces lifespan and is the cause of many debilitating diseases and blindness. Life expectancy in the USA is now at a high of 77.6 years. If the researchers’ predictions hold true in the next 50 years, it would be the first reversal in life expectancy since the government started keeping track in 1900. This year, about 1,200,000 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the USA alone, with hundreds of thousands more in the UK and in Australia and other Western countries. When added to the millions who already have cancer, the anticipated loss of life easily exceeds 1,000,000 per year. (Over 1,500 people in the U.S. alone die every day from cancer.)In spite of massive investments in research, cancer rates are increasing markedly among all age groups, including children, whose rate of increase is nearly 1% per year according to the American Cancer Institute. In some parts of the world, cancer already affects 1 in every 2 people, and the trend continues to get worse. Eventually the rate could approach 100% Although small improvements have occurred in treating some cancers, the overall rate of recovery for cancer patients has changed very little over the past 50 years. The average cancer survival rate was about 50% in 1950, and it is still about 50% today. For African-Americans, the survival rate in 1950 was under 40%, and it also remains about the same today. MYTH #2: Chemotherapy is very effective in treating cancer and in saving the lives of cancer victims. False! Over the years, many dramatic claims have been made by pharmaceutical companies and other members of the cancer establishment regarding drug based treatments for cancer. Today, chemotherapy is the most common form of cancer treatment. If such successful results were actually being achieved, improvements could readily be observed in the survival rates. Yet, survival rates remain basically unchanged. Chemotherapy consists of a mixture of highly toxic drugs which are given the patient in a series of treatments over a period of time. Research shows that chemotherapy can often cause a partial or even complete shrinkage of a tumour, although this shrinkage does not necessarily prolong expected survival. In fact, studies have found that the cancer often returns even more aggressively than before, because the chemotherapy has created more resistant cells. In addition, a strongly negative side effect of chemo is that it can severely damage the body’s immune system as well as the kidneys and liver. Some patients will die from these complications alone. It is often a case of the cure being far more serious and deadly then the disease. A good indication of the effectiveness of chemotherapy can be found in polls surveying cancer doctors regarding what they would choose for themselves if they were diagnosed with cancer. Many US doctors have stated they would not choose chemotherapy for themselves due to its ineffectiveness and its unacceptable levels of toxicity. Sixty percent of doctors who responded to a similar poll in the UK indicated that they would not submit themselves to chemotherapy! Still, doctors continue to administer chemotherapy because they do not have approved medical alternatives. The fact is, there are large profits to be made by the drug companies in administering chemotherapy, whether it is actually effective or not. By Glenn Freiboth If you have ever been on a diet or weight loss program you know that you constantly have voices talking to you to try to derail you from your goal. I like to call them the Fat Demons. They want you to stay fat. Maybe it is a protective thing in your subconscious that says, If you stay fat then people will stay away from you and you wont be hurt by bad relationships anymore. You know what I am talking about, dont you? You are walking down the aisles at the grocery store and it isnt the fresh fruits and vegetables that are calling out to you, it is the twinkies and the Little Debbie snack cakes! Am I right? You know I am! You walk into a convenience store and buy a diet drink and then you get to the checkout stand and you grab a chocolate bar to go along with it. Or you buy the Baked Lays chips and then buy a container of French Onion Dip to dip them in. You are on your diet and every commercial on TV screams out at you with food ads. Two Extra Large Pizzas for $10.00! You go through the local Wendys Drive thru and you order a grilled chicken breast sandwich with lettuce only and you have done good until the clerk says, You want fries with that? Do you want to biggie size it? Want a Frosty to go with that? Now you have your caloric intake for two days! Resist the temptation to let them sucker you into the crate of fries and the 55 gallon drum of coke. You have to identify your weaknesses and know how to combat them. If you know that you have a weakness for junk food at your local convenience store stay out of it. If you have a craving for Big Macs and Double Whoppers with cheese stay away from McDonalds and Burger King! Dont sit and eat in front of a TV, instead eat in front of a mirror! Im not kidding. If you sit there and watch yourself eat and you are overweight you will become disgusted if you try to eat too much. Dont let little slip ups get you down. Just say, You got me that time but you wont get me again. Keep a positive attitude. Everybodys Fat Demons are different. You have to identify the ones that call to you and recognize them for what they are. Every time you beat them you will become stronger against them. Choosing Healthy Plants for Your Garden

By Ronald F. Patterson When working at a nursery, you are supposed to be an expert on everything. Well, I work at a nursery and I sure don’t know everything. However, I am considered an expert on certain plants, fertilizers, and habitats. Things happen fast this time of year and for the next few months. Flowers, trees and shrubs come and go as if there is a revolving door. Here today, gone tomorrow. Blooms fade in a matter of days. Plants get beat up by customers. ID tags are lost. Often I am asked to ID a certain plant and its growth habits. If you don’t trust your local nurseryman or garden center workers, here are a few tips when buying annuals and perennials. When buying perennials, look for ID tags. What is the name of the plant, what growing conditions are required and what are the plants habits? But it has a pretty flower and I like it!Will you like the same plant next year when it has invaded your prized lilies? The plant you bought was only 2 feet tall and in bloom, why is it 4 feet tall this year? ID tags will assist you in this. A nurseryman may not always know or be as helpful. You may have thought it was something else. Growers pinch or cut back plants to make them bushier and to produce more blooms. Ask questions and read tags. Look for plants that are budding, not in bloom. This way you enjoy the flowers longer. Look for multiple stems or stalks. Pull the plant out of the pot and check out the root system. Are the roots white and healthy looking? Is the plant pot bound and showing signs of stress?Does the potting soil smell earthy or sour? Is it a plug from a 1qt. pot shoved into a 3qt. pot and selling at a premium price. Most nurseryman don’t mind if you put the plant back in the pot. Annuals grow fast, their sole purpose in life is to reproduce and die. Look for annuals that are full of growth and buds. Is the tray a bit stalky? Look for new growth coming from the bottom of the plant stalk. If there are signs of new growth, then this is a healthy plant. You can cut the top off and the annual with fill out and bloom better then before. Keep deadheading for continual bloom. Continuous blooms will bring butterflies. Blooms also bring insects that bring birds. Zinnias are a prime example. Butterflies love zinnias. Tiny insects congregate in the blooms and you will find hummingbirds hovering over the flowers licking up these tiny bugs. I dead head perennials that are considered invasive and leave my natives for the birds. Some annuals will go to seed late in the season for my wildlife as well. Plant in groupings for color and to attract wildlife. Never pay full price for a perennial where there is no ID tag. Plant it in a trial bed to see what you may have for next year. You can always prune back a perennial and pinch back annuals to have bushier more productive plants. Some perennials will give you a second and third bloom if you deadhead while others still will continue to bloom all season if they don’t go to seed. Unless you have a serger, the edges of your seam are going to be ragged… and possibly unraveling. Now, if you’re sewing a lined drapery panel or sewing a pillow… a sewing project where the seams will end up being hidden, then the ragged edges are no big deal. But what if you plan on sewing a sheer drapery panel? Those seams would look unsightly. What do you do? You sew a french seam instead. A french seam is a seam that encloses the raw edges into itself. It’s very simple and will make your projects nice and neat. Step 1. Lay your fabric panels wrong sides together. Step 2. Sew a 3/8″ seam along the side edge Step 3. Open up the sewn panel and press the seams open. Press well Step 4. Fold the panel on the seam line right sides together. Step 5. Press the folded edge Step 6. Sew in 5/8″ from the folded edge enclosing the raw edges of the 3/8″ seam Step 7.
